It has taken some time but thankfully, you won’t be needing a smartphone or a tablet to maneuver your DJI drone.
A new smart controller was launched by DJI at this year’s CES in Las Vegas. The pilots can now fly some of the DJI drone models with the new smart controller without having to use a handheld mobile device. It comes with an integrated 5.5” screen with an ultra-bright display and an output of 1000 cd/m2, twice the brightness of conventional smartphones. Essentially similar functions can be performed with the new DJI Smart Controller that are carried out with the DJI Go app on your handheld mobile device.
The controller is presently compatible with Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro.
Previously, the drone pilots were required to download the DJI Go 4 app on their handheld mobile devices which were subsequently connected to the controller for maneuvering the drone and viewing the real time video broadcast from the drone’s camera. Most of us did not fancy this experience as we prefer to keep our hardware in the same environment. The need for having to connect the phone meant that the operator had to maintain his drone while ensuring that the phone was charged and the software was updated.
The fact that Yuneec has its screen built into the controller makes them a crowd favorite despite DJI’s prolific lineup of products. However, DJI is back in the game with this product and giving a tough fight to Yuneec. Other than this, DJI are ahead of the pack in virtually every department and so the new smart controller is a welcome move and will push DJI further ahead of the rest of the competitors.
DJI also came up with an updated DJI Go 4 app with new features such as Sky Talk that lets pilots broadcast the real time video footage captured from the drone’s camera to social networking platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WeChat. Videos and images can be transferred from the controller to the smartphone or tablet via the DJI Go Share feature. The manufacturer claims that the smart controller offers a battery time of 2.5 hours and can operate in harsh weather conditions such as -4 degree Fahrenheit and 104 degree Fahrenheit.
The controller is available for purchase at $649. Check the complete DJI list below:
