If you are a new entrant to the world of drones or the aerial cinematography industry, you must be wondering what a drone is. Whenever you come across DJI and GoPro products, more often than not, they have a gimbal associated with them. You must have heard that gimbals tend to enhance the image quality, minimize jumpiness in videos and exterminate the bloody jello effect. If you are not aware of these concepts, stay tuned and you will get to know about them.

According to Wikipedia, a gimbal is a pivoted support that allows an object to spin around its axis. If there are three gimbals, with one of them mounted on each other at the right angular pivotal axis, the object mounted on the innermost gimbal remains independent of the rotation of this pivotal support.

A gimbal, actually, ensures that your video remains steady by keeping the video recording device stable and fixed. The recording device will point at one direction whatever the direction of movement of the aircraft carrying it may be and even whether the weather conditions are inclement.
Gimbal is a must-have feature in the case of professional videography. You can get gimbals of the varying price ranges. A top quality gimbal might cost you in excess of $1,000. Anyway, it all depends on what your preference and requirements are.
DJI Zenmuse H3-3D Gimbal
The DJI Zenmuse H3-3D is a pivotal supporting device that has been developed specifically for the DJI Phantom 2. It is operated by a triple-axis brushless that allows for tilting, canting, and panning. It ensures that the horizon level of the aerial videos remains constant and there are no undesired vibrations. It can also be used to drive the camera remotely; thereby enabling the pilot to modify the camera angle with an accuracy of 0.08 degrees.

The gimbal provides electronic plug and plays support for the DJI Phantom 2. However, it boils down to the model of your Phantom 2 whether you require an additional mounting platform or not. The original Phantom 2 had a narrow opening at the bottom of the frame that was built for the H3-2D and happens to be too small for the H3-3D gimbal.
So, you require an additional mounting platform in this case that serves as a spacer, and a much taller landing paraphernalia is also needed. If you own subsequent Phantom 2 versions, then you do not need an additional mounting platform and the default landing paraphernalia is sufficient.
In the case of some other drone with a flight control system similar to DJI’s, you may use the hobbyist variant of the H3-3D that comes with a GCU and other requisite gear. Neither variant provides support for the DJI Phantom 1.

DJI Zenmuse H3-2D Gimbal
The DJI Zenmuse H3-2D gimbal is compatible with the GoPro Hero3 camera for the DJI Phantom quadcopter. It is a dual-axis which means that it can stabilize the drone upward, downward, left and right. It cannot pan sideways for which you require a triple-axis.
The DJI Zenmuse H3-2D gets connected to the DJI Phantom or DJI F450 via a dampening unit which is attached to the bottom of the aircraft with four screws. Once all the gear is ready, enjoy the super-stable videos. However, DJI suggests not to use older versions of GoPro cameras like the Hero HD2 since they boast disparate weight and sizes and do not support this gimbal. You can get this gimbal for under $400.
DJI Zenmuse Gimbal Z15
This is a triple-axis that allows for unrestricted rotation. It allows the pilot to adjust its angle with an accuracy of 0.05 degrees which is better than DJI Zenmuse H3-3D. This implies that you will get more stability with this gimbal. The Zenmuse Z15 is compatible with Sony Nex-5n/5R/Nex-7 or Panasonic GH-2.
DJI Zenmuse Z15-GH3
This is an upgraded version of the DJI Zenmuse Z15. It has been enhanced especially for the Panasonic GH3. The user can adjust the camera angle to a precision of about 0.01 degrees which is phenomenal. It is also compatible with the S800 EVO model
DJI Zenmuse Z15-5D Gimbal
This heck of a device provides support for the mighty Canon 5D Mark III and the Canon 5D Mark II. These are flagship devices for professional photographers. It lets the user adjust the camera angle to 0.02 degrees precision and is completely tailored for the 5D series.
