Keep in mind that none of the information that we are going to share with you is official. All the stuff that you will be going through this article is pure conjecture and some of our thoughts and ideas. As is the case almost invariably, the DJI machines are followed, revered and used by millions of fans and this is the reason the rumour mills around the world are working their magic out with great efficiency.
Without much ado, let’s not waste any more time and get back to business. Here are some of the rumours and leaks that we’ll be discussing about the DJI Phantom 5.

Date of Release – DJI 5
Let’s discuss the basic stuff first and there could be nothing more fundamental than the date of release. DJI so far has not made any announcement or given any indications regarding the date of release of the mighty DJI Phantom 5. However, there are lots of people around us who claim to have formidable information regarding the exact date of release of this masterpiece. Some of these folks are so confident about the authenticity of their information that they have initiated countdowns to the anticipated date of release. And I believe that they are pretty much right.
The expected date of release of the terrific DJI Phantom 5 is June 15, 2017. We are not quite sure as yet whether this is the actual date of release. I hope that DJI will jump in to break the silence and let us all know what the exact date of release of this technological wonder will be. We are expecting them to make an announcement sooner rather than later.
Camera Upgrade
Camera is such a crucial component of not only DJI Phantom drones but also probably all the other machines out there. As a matter of fact, the platforms that are being touted as phenomenal devices for aerial photography professionals and cinematographers, camera is such an important part of their functionality and we all know that the Phantom series is the leading aerial photography platform.
So, you must be wondering what the new camera upgrade in the DJI Phantom 5 entails. Most of the readers out there would agree with me that the existing camera on the DJI Phantom 4 Pro is quite exceptional. It has the ability to capture video footage at a stunning resolution of 4K and at a prolific frame rate of 30 frames per second. If you are one of those who are not enthralled by 4K resolution, the device has the slow motion video footage recording ability in FHD that captures seamless movements regardless of the drone’s speed in the air.
There are tons of people out there who are advocating that the new camera in the DJI Phantom 5 is going to receive a major overhaul. We are expecting the camera to be 20MP with a one inch sensor attached onto a brand new omnidirectional gimbal. The existing camera and the gimbal in the DJI Phantom 4 Pro are still one of the best in the business but the new advancements are likely to gain traction among the enthusiastic DJI fans. We are hoping that the MSRP number does not get increased immensely though.
DJI Phantom 5 and its new features
As far as the features are concerned, the DJI Phantom 5 is expected to incorporate plenty of new features. The most noteworthy of all the features out there is the impressive omnidirectional collision detecting system which was also known as collision avoidance. DJI have already used this feature to phenomenal success in their previous generations of DJI Phantom but there are looking to enhance it further in the coming device. It is expected that the new machine will include a lot of intricately designed sensors and enhanced Artificial Intelligence features to detect potential collisions at a speed that is much swifter than observed in any other drone on the market.
Moreover, the DJI Phantom 5 is also expected to witness an improvement in its maximum speed. People are claiming that its maximum speed will be improved to 55 miles per hour; thereby ensuring that the Phantom 5 becomes a competitor in the drone racing world.
Auto Tracking technology is another functionality that is an enhancement of the Follow Me feature. This feature lets dronies capture stunning aerial videos and images without having to manually control the device. It is designed basically to follow any intended object or human being without being manoeuvred by the pilot. It will also be able to avoid obstacles in this mode of flight.
Phantom 5 Specifications
With regard to specifications, there have been plenty of rumours flying around. Every other day, there is a new rumour that seems to pop up from the rumours mill and so we are uncertain which of them (if any) is true.
Having said that, here are the speculated DJI Phantom 5 specifications:
As discussed above, the wonderful machine will witness a ramp up in its speed. With the sports mode triggered on, its speed would be increased to 55 miles per hour. In addition, similar to its predecessor Phantom 4 Pro drone, it will boast a control range of a whopping 7 Km. This is still more than that provided by any other machine to have hit the shelves. So, I basically find no reason why the engineers would want to enhance this feature.
DJI Phantom 5 is expected to receive an upgrade in the battery. This might sound to you quite typical but there is also speculation that the manufacturers are also going to toy with its battery type. There are lot of people who are claiming that the battery pack will be the 1.2 LiPo one. There are also those who are conjecturing that DJI have invested a significant amount of resources into developing a battery that can furnish a flight duration of 33 minutes.
This is great news for folks who love to explore their surroundings without having to worry about the battery juices running low. Nevertheless, whatever the kind of battery DJI have in store for the Phantom 5, I am quite confident that it will provide a flight duration of about 27 minutes at the very least. If it is anything lesser than this, then I along with my friends would definitely have their hearts broken.
Mixed Rumours on DJI Phantom 5
Rumours are slowly but gradually getting shorter in number. Fortunately for us all, we still have a few rumours that we can discuss. Let’s start with the DJI Companion app for the Android and iOS powered smartphones. People are speculating that the app will be revamped from scratch and a lot of new features will be added to it.
There is another rumour with regards to the FAA. The speculation is rife that the DJI Go app will be able to tell the drone pilots whether or not they are abiding by the rules and regulations stipulated by FAA. Obviously, it will be functional in the United States while the remaining world will have no impact of the added feature.
You must have got accustomed to the high pitched drilling sound that is so common to all DJI Phantom drones. There are rumours that this sound will be exterminated since the engineers have worked to produce much lower start up noise. Moreover, the DJI Phantom 5 will be a lot more agile in terms of start up in contrast to its previous generations.
