MJX Bugs 3 Review – Best Cheap Brushless GoPro Drone
MJX Bugs 3 has really proved to be a surprise package since you get a power-packed drone boasting amazing quality and fabulous performance for just under $100. The splendid flight time of 19 minutes distinguishes the drone from its competitors.
Moreover, the MJX Bugs 3 is also capable of carrying a GoPro action camera. Here is a video review of the drone but you should sift through the entire post to get to know the drone better.
Unboxing and product quality
Even before you unbox the quadcopter, the quality is evident thanks to a solid packaging as the drone is housed in a Styrofoam compartment inside the box.
The box also portrays that you can also purchase numerous spare parts and add-ons to transform the quadcopter into virtually anything you can ever imagine. You may convert it from a FPV racing drone to a superb camera drone.
Some of the add-ons include a cool omnidirectional panoramic camera and FPV monitors and head gear.
The MJX Bugs 3 boasts a size of 31cm from motor to motor and more than 40cm from propeller to propeller. Hence, the drone is a medium sized gadget and sports a slot for attaching a an action camera that is compatible with GoPro Hero 3 and Hero 4 but not with the Hero 5.
You can also get a good quality yet a low cost 4K action camera. This free of cost chrome extension will help you keep track of the lowest prices for action cameras and drones. The extension also helps you choose your favorite drone from our top recommendations. Here is a detailed video explaining how to use the extension.
This video shows the complete unravelling of the new MJX Bugs 3 GoPro drone.
As discussed in the video, the build quality of the drone is quite remarkable. The plastic used to make it is of quite good quality and has the ability to withstand plenty of harsh usage and crashes.
The original packaging includes the following items:
- The quadcopter
- 2 sets of propellers
- 4V battery charger
- 4 propeller guards
- 4 landing gear arms (these are needed only if you are to install a camera)
- Camera mount
- 4V 1800mAh battery
Drone flight – Functioning of Brushless Motors
The primary difference between brushed and brushless motors is that the MJX Bugs 3 comes with brushless motors that are six times more powerful. In addition, the motors are long lasting and reliable.
The quadcopter was designed by the manufacturers with a couple of things in mind:
1 – Reliable cheap camera drone
The device can be transformed into a GoPro drone by attaching the camera mount to the chassis and connecting the landing legs. The drone is able to cope with harsh weather conditions and offers a stable flight despite the absence of a gimbal.
I employed a full High Definition camera bought from a Chinese hobby store that worked like a charm with the machine. However, you can opt for the best low cost 4K UHD cameras and the output will be even better.
Here is the video footage captured by the MJX Bugs 3 with my full HD camera attached.
2 – A racing or FPV drone
The drone comes with brushless motors and hence emerges as a powerful machine in the price range. The 1805 1800KV motor ensures that the drone is able to attain high speeds and make sharp turns at an incredible pace.
The drone has two primary modes of flight:
- Camera mode
- Racing mode
The power and speed of the drone are altered as the drone moves at a slower speed when a GoPro camera is mounted and faster when engaged in a racing competition.
The propeller guards can be detached along with the landing legs and camera with the camera mount to reduce the weight of the machine and hence allow the device to fly for a longer duration of time and at a faster speed.
Lucky for all of us, MJX have taken every little aspect into consideration and integrated a little landing paraphernalia at the end of each arm to ensure that the drone does not tip over.
The drone moves really fast in sport mode and has the ability to perform flips by pressing a single button. Remember that the machine has the ability to perform flips even with the camera attached.
The MJX Bugs 3 is still not at par with the professional racing drones but serves as a perfect foil if you want to get into the world of drone racing and want to get a feel for what racing with fast moving drones is like.
Battery and flight time
As mentioned above, the drone provides a flight duration of 19 minutes or thereabouts without any add-ons attached and while it is hovering in the air.
Personally, I have flown the drone for about 17 minutes with the accessories attached and for about 15 minutes if I carried out some spectacular aerial maneuvers.
The 7.4V 1800mAh LiPo battery boasts a semi-proprietary design and comes fitted with a XT30 connector that can be fitted in the specially designated slot inside the drone.
Radio controller and buttons
The transmitter is rather a simple one and white in color but still does its job well. The thumb sticks should be attached first with the help of screws and it requires 4 AA batteries to function properly.
Here are the buttons and functions:
- Red button top left – it arms the motors and switches them off
- Button below it – variations between the two modes of flight (camera and sport mode)
- Trimming buttons positioned adjacent to the sticks – these buttons are handy if the drone goes in a certain direction all by itself
- Button at top right – flip button or barrel roll (pilot has to press it first once and then swiftly move the left stick in a direction to perform the flip)
- Button below it – it is used to trigger the camera on and off (it functions with the camera add-ons by MJX only)
The Wrap Up
Despite the fact that the MJX Bugs 3 does not include features such as autonomous return to home, GPS and headless mode, the drone does not really need them a lot to be honest. Moreover, considering the price tag, this seems to be the best deal that I have come across in a long time.
